Mierle Ukeles was the official artist in residence at the New York City Department of Sanitation in 1983 and beyond. One of her most recognised works was this mirrored garbage truck which, for a time, was in general use and in deed considered a privilege to drive.
It clearly showed the public, with a stroke of genius, that they are the source of the garbage.
Her work usually focused on un-sung heroes who, in her words “keep things going”.
